2pm, Sunday 17th February 2019

Adults: £20, Children (age 14 and below): £10

Join 5 FOOT WAY at On the Brook to welcome in the Chinese New Year of the Pig.

We start with a demonstration of making traditional Chinese dumplings - Michelle from 5 Foot Way will share her personal recipes for pork and Chinese chive dumplings and tofu, mushroom and chive dumplings. She will start with how to make the dough and fillings, and then demonstrate rolling out and filling techniques.

Everybody will have a chance to roll out dumpling wrappers and sit together filling the dumplings, like many families do across China and the Chinese diaspora. Michelle will  demonstrate how to cook the dumplings, and what condiments to serve them with.

"Prosperity Toss"

After the workshop, take part in the Malaysian Chinese New Year ritual of the “Prosperity Toss”. A beautiful smoked salmon and “YU SHENG” salad of vegetables, sauces and spices is presented on a large plate with fresh fish or seafood. “Yu Sheng” which means raw fish (but frequently smoked salmon and other seafood are often used), sounds like the term for “abundance” in Mandarin or Cantonese. The Chinese name of all the ingredients used have their corresponding homonym - welcoming prosperity, abundance, sweet relationships etc into your household.

The host will add ingredients calling out the significance and Chinese idioms correspondence of each. When this is done, everyone takes up a pair of chopsticks and communally mixes the salad, lifting the ingredients as high as possible in the air – shouting “lo hei” meaning literally “scoop it up” – the height of the toss indicates the growth in the diners’ fortunes, so everyone is expected to toss enthusiastically!

After the toss, we will all tuck into the Prosperity salad, followed by bowls of dumplings.

Participants will be able to take home the dumplings they made in the workshop and recipe cards.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. Spaces are limited so booking is essential. To book, please call 01749 813048 or email info@onthebrook.co.uk

The event will last between 2-2 ½ hours.

Please note: The Prosperity Toss contains seafood.
